What is it?
===========
Empathy consists of a rich set of reusable instant messaging
widgets,
and a GNOME client using those widgets. It uses Telepathy
and Nokia's
Mission Control, and reuses Gossip's UI. The main goal is to
permit
desktop integration by providing libempathy and
libempathy-gtk
libraries. libempathy-gtk is a set of powerful widgets that
can be
embeded into any GNOME application.

| Empathy 0.22.0 / Telepathy-Haze break? |

|
2008-03-19 10:29:16 |
Hi Everyone,
I think the latest version of libempathy (0.22.0) has a
problem with
Telepathy-Haze.
Setup:
(all are from the packages in Ubuntu repos)
Empathy (empathy-0.22.0-1)
libempathy (libempathy11-0.22.0-1)
libempathy-gtk (libempathy-gtk11-0.22.0-1)
telepathy-haze (telepathy-haze-0.2.0-1)
I can successfully send messages to/from an AIM account
(over Haze) from
the empathy-chat-chandler, but the messages I send and
receive don't
show up in the empathy-chat-chandler window.
Jabber still works fine. The same AIM account works fine in
Pidgin.
As far as I'm aware, everything worked until a recent
upgrade in Ubuntu
packages from libempathy/-gtk10 to 11 (corresponding to
0.21.91 and
0.22.0, I believe).
I built the standard 0.21.91 from source, but it's still
broken for me.
As far as I can tell, Ubuntu hides older versions of
packages, so I
couldn't try re-installing the libempathy/-gtk10 packages to
make sure
they still work for me.
Has anyone else seen this bug?
Is there any more information I could gather to help figure
out the
problem?
Thanks,
-Travis

I saw this bug while packaging the recent Empathy bump for
Fedora; and
spent the good majority of a day trying to figure out what
heck was
going on.
I found out that updating mission-control, libtelepathy and
telepathy-glib to their most recent versions seemed to
"fix" the issue.
These are 4.64, 0.3.3, and 0.7.5, respectively.
(The packages names probably differ slightly from Fedora to
Ubuntu, so
please be sure to check those as needed.)
Hope that helps.

There shouldn't be any compatibility changes between these
releases, so just
upgrading shouldn't have fixed the problem. Either there is
some subtle change
in behaviour, or the bug is still there and just not
manifesting itself. I
hope for the latter personally. Either way, it deserves
closer inspection.

Yeah. I don't know what the issue was or if it's still there
even, but
since updating those packages as mentioned I've yet to see
the error
again. Whether it's truly "fixed" or just hidden
is something we'd need
to inspect more closely, as you mention.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the tip.
I just did this:
for package in [libtelepathy-0.3.3, telepathy-glib-0.7.5,
telepathy-mission-control-4.64,
telepathy-haze-0.2.0, empathy-0.22.0]:
unpack package
cd package-dir
./configure --prefix=/usr
make
sudo make install
telepathy-glib and telepathy-mission-control were the
plain-vanilla
upstream tarballs; the others were from the Ubuntu source
tarballs. It
shouldn't matter, though, since the Ubuntu versions seem to
basically be
unpatched.
(Can any of the Telepathy and/or Ubuntu packagers chime in
with a
yea/nay on this last assertion?)
Unfortunately, it didn't fix anything for me (as Dafydd
suspected).
Somebody else want to do some other "close
inspection"? (preferably
*closer*

Congratulations, you just fucked up your nice sane system...
Please don't do
silly things like this and if you still do, please don't
recommend other people
to do the same.

As a Debian Telepathy packager (Ubuntu syncs their packaging
from Debian) and
Telepathy developer i can concur that the pacakages are
basically unpatched.

This looks exactly like the problem I see with
empathy-{0.22,git}
and freenode.net IRC server (and telepathy-idle, of course)
on
Fedora Rawhide.
So, just standing behind the original reporter -- this looks
to
me like something real, not limited to telepathy-haze nor
Ubuntu.
