error in utf8 subject string

Now I hit the "bug" with varchar instead bytea
also, I tried converting 
from cyrus to dbmail:

An in the postgreSQL log (sorry, in german):
FEHLER:  ungültige Byte-Sequenz für Kodierung »UTF8«: 0xdf55
FEHLER:  aktuelle Transaktion wurde abgebrochen, Befehle
werden bis zum 
Ende der Transaktion ignoriert

Now I also believe that fields should be bytea. A simple
"alter table 
alter column" doesn't work, because
FEHLER:  Spalte »subjectfield« kann nicht in Typ »bytea«
umgewandelt 
werden

So no auto convert possible. Would anyone know a
"clean" way that 
doesn't mess up everything?
