dbmail-util failed because of full disk

hi.

if got a problem here with a mailarchive running dbmail
2.0.7.

i forgot to install dbmail-util as crontab there and the
messageblk is 
50GB big.
now i've started dbmail-util -a , everything looked fine
and i reran 
with dbmail-util -a -y.
i had 30GB free, but dbmail-util filled up the space while
optimizing 
the database .
the processlist showed "copy to tmp table".
when mysql got the disk full error, dbmail-util finished but
without 
giving the 30GB free he filled up.

perhaps someone could give me an advise how i can recover
the used space 
and as the next step successfully optimize the db.

so far i found out that only dumping the db, dropping it and
then
reinstall can fix my space problem.

but im still interested how i could optimize the db with
dbmail-util.
