It is postgresql server, but not pg8, it is 7.4.8, so no
autovacuum (as far 
as I know).

If I upgraded to svn would I need to do anything besides
just recompiling 
the source? (just make and install)

I would recommend 8.1 or 8.2 very much.  there are LOTS of
performance
enhancements in both of those releases.
