Correct. That is how IDLE works.
Actually, the IMAP rfc allows notifications to be sent
without IDLE for any
mailbox. But afaik there are no clients that actually
support this, or rather
since most clients will be confused by unsollicited
unilateral server data the
server cannot rely on such mechanisms. Since there was need
for a mechanism for
a client to tell the server it is ready for such data, IDLE
was conceived. But
the downside still was that it applies only to the mailbox
that is in a selected
state.
