MySQL clustering is like trying to create an industrial

Also the serial problem, of having inserts at multiple
locations is  
not solved using clustering.

Disagree. Mysql clustering and even the circle-replication
method works like
charme with dbmail. How does it sound to you if I tell that
several years of
experience with exim+dbmail+mysql(circlereplication) has not
produced ANY
database related problems so far?! Even when a machine died
by fire a year
ago. Downtime? ZERO seconds.
Also you benefits form the fact that you can extend your
storage pretty
easy. More easy as if you would use only a local
storagesystem. ;) another
benefit is that you have redundancy so its pretty easy to
create a
safe-on-fail system.
But im sure you know that. Right?

The serial problem _is_ solved for MySQL with just the
simple hack of
offsets and increment amounts -- but the IMAP problem is
not. IMAP
effectively requires an auto increment column of its own and
does not
support these types of hacks around the message id number.
