| Any takers for river rafting? |

|
2006-08-25 19:38:01 |
So it's a little off topic, but I'd like to go rafting
before summer is
out and I found a couple of outfitters who provide all
equipment and offer
half day trips. The catch is, if you want to go on the
Clackamas, they
stop doing it on September 4th. If we go on a different
river, then a
carpool will need to be arranged.
Is anyone game to go with me? I had a blast when I went
rafting with some
amateurs, except for the part where they brought no safety
equipment and
didn't know how to rescue me. These folks haven't lost
someone in Oregon
yet.
The outfitters:

If you want a mild rafting trip on the clackamas
theres no need for an outfitter. Just put in at
McIver park near Estacada and float down to Barton
park. It's a 6 hour tour with some impressive rapids.
All you need to buy is a 30-40 dollar raft and a car
at the bottom. I have done the trip many times.

Hey,
The idea of putting in at McIver park is a REAL bad idea for
novices.
There is a powerful set of rapids up there that they call
'The Toilet Bowl'
Now if we wanted to put in at Barton Park or the Carver boat
ramp..thats
a different story. I've made that run a TON of times and
theres
definitely no guide required. That would be fun.

The reason I was going for an outfitters initially is this:
I went with some "experienced" amateurs before
and besides the river not
being adequately scouted (so it was more intense than we
expected), things
were great up until I needed rescuing off of a rock in the
middle of the
river. None of us had helmets on and the attitude was mostly
towards
self-rescue. No rope, no experience in rescue and while
taking newbies on
what turned out to be a technical class III or III+ river
made for an
"interesting" ride. Needless to say, I'm
looking for something a little
less "exciting" for my next trip.
By going to an outfitters, people who can be sued if
someone does not
make it back, who are therefore all about safety would be a
good way to
reinforce the positive aspects of my previous trip, rather
than
remembering the fearful aspects next time I encounter
rapids.
Having said that, I would be happy to go on another amateur
trip as long
as I have a helmet and know that someone has the equipment
and knowledge
to perform/assist in a rescue if necessary. Also, a bigger
boat (the
previous trip was in an inflatable kayak) would probably
make classIII
rapids more fun and less terrifying.
I am just *itching* to do more outdoorsy things before
school starts.
