I will go and order 20 or so of the max232cpe chips so we
can then build the
ttl convertors. This will be an interesting hack.

| 206/503 camp out 2007 |

|
2006-12-24 05:30:44 |
Lately there has been a call for a campsite with water
activities. I
researched all the state parks within the geographic area
between Portland
and Seattle. I came up with two viable options. Today
converge and I went
to check them out.
There has also been some interest in a camp out in
September. If somebody
is interested in setting up a camp out then, I suspect there
will be a
smaller but still signficant group of folks attending.
DATES: Reservations must be made January 1st to ensure that
we get the
dates we want. I am considering June 8-10 or 15-17. If there
any
pre-existing conflicts (field day, etc), please let me know.
Earlier would
be less crowded, but would be more likely to incur rain or
cooler weather.
Here is a comparison of the three parks.
lewis and clark state park
FEATURES:
seclusion
onsite/private pit toilet
large fire ring with benches
kitchen shelter
onsite water
individual tent sites
LOCATION: far from day use and other campsites
ACTIVITIES: about 5 mi of hiking tails
FINANCIAL: Fees are "per head, per night" $25 for
reservations
PROS:
truly secluded
campsite completely contained/exclusive
ability to "tuck" a tent off into a corner of the
site
good distance between portland and seattle
CONS:
Not much to do outside of campsite
Lake sylvia state park
DRIVE: Significantly longer for both Portland and Seattle,
significantly
off hwy
FEATURES:
Kitchen shelter
onsite water
2 small fire rings
Adjacent to lake on 2 sides
Some seclusion
Quiet at night
LOCATION: far from campsites, near day use site. adjacent to
picnic/walk
in sites
ACTIVITIES: *possible* paddle boating rental in summer,
about 5 miles of
hiking trails (the street
around the lake?), non-motored boat launch, swimming?
(leeches, dirty
water), fishing
FINANCIAL: fees are flat rate, on a tiered basis. $7 for
reservations.
Must pay ALL fees all in
advance
PROS:
possible lake fun
CONS:
small, murky, leach ridden lake
shared bathroom
bathroom very far from site
rainbow falls state park
DRIVE: slightly longer drive for both folks, but right off
of hwy
FEATURES:
kitchen shelter
medium sized fire ring with benches
onsite water
near chehalis river
LOCATION: near horsecamp, adjacent to day use area
ACTIVITIES: unlimited hiking (>50mi), *possible* rafting
FINANCIAL: uses "per head, per night" fee system.
$25 reservation fee
PROS:
good distance between Portland and Seattle
possible river fun (is there a smaller creek?)
Bigger site (than sylvia) allows tents to possibly be set
back a little
from kitchen
CONS:
shared bathroom with day use area
right on main campground road
river possibly dangerous - no swimming or wading
Site is very open... no "tucking" tents back in
trees, passersby can ogle
Given these options, I suspect it might work out well for
us to
choose additional activities we can do at or near Lewis
Clark State Park.
We might even take a daytrip somewhere to do something. I am
soliciting
ideas for activities.

| camping update |

|
2006-12-26 20:15:08 |
This year's camping trip will take place at Lewis and Clark
State Park
June 15-17th, unless there are objections. Reservations will
be made Jan
1st.
The per head fee per night may be 2.30 (the fee is going up
for
2007). This year instead of making life difficult for the
ranger, everyone
will give their money to me each day BEFORE the ranger
comes. Therefore,
PLEASE BRING CHANGE. I will not be making change, only
accepting direct
fees. If someone wants to be a change-maker, that would be
fantastic, but
I will only accept cash to hand to the ranger.
When the exact fee per head per night is known, it will be
posted.
Does anyone have any (non-electrical!) activities they would
like to
propose for the camping trip this year?

| camp out 2007 |

|
2007-01-02 18:20:02 |
Dates have been reserved at Lewis and Clark State Park for
June 14-17th.
Arriving Thursday and departing Sunday.
Cost is $2.15 per head per night, except Thursday night
will probably
cost $21.50 total (there's a minimum of 10 people). If
someone has trouble
with the extra cost on Thursday, I can help with it.

| shanghai tunnel tour |

|
2007-01-03 20:13:02 |
I have some friends coming from out of town in early
February and we plan
to go see the Shaghai tunnels under Portland. If I get 15
people, we can
book our own tour. It looks like Sunday, February 4th may be
the best day
for it.
The cost of the tour is about $12 and must be paid in
advance. Any
takers? I have cross-posted this to dc206 in case any of our
Seattle
friends would like to come down to see the land of hookers
and booze. If
you need a place to sleep, please email me and I'll see what
I can do.
Here is some information about the Shanghai tunnels:
http://members.tripod.com/cgs-mthood/shanghai_tunne
ls_FAQ.htm
For those that don't know, Portland's tunnels had more
nefarious uses
than Seattle's underground city. Portland was deemed the
worst city for
men disappearing and waking up on a ship bound for Shanghai.
Pretty much
anything illegal or immoral was found in the tunnels. It
should be a fun
tour!

Jiji and I are interested in coming down from Seattle for
this. We may
or may not need a place to stay. What's the best way to get
you the
tour money?
