I've studied .NET for several years now, but I've never built a full app
it in, primarily because my main customer (the State of Colorado) is NOT
interested. The ONLY reason I can ever see using NET is if a customer
demands it. That hasn't happened so far, but it is the reason I try to
keep somewhat up to date on the technology. I feel .NET is
unnecessarily complex and offers little advantage for the kind of work I
do. I have a Delphi database app of about 40,000 lines which I began to
port to NET in C# and discovered that the VS 2006 environment generated
42,000 lines of code just to connect to my database. How is that an
advantage? On top of that, I find the VS environment somewhat clumsy,
the compiler is dreadfully slow and the Help is not very helpful. And,
as others have pointed out, it's still COM underneath. Unfortunately, I
don't see CodeGear keeping up, since they're still targeting .NET 1.1.
So, I'm using D7 and BDS'06 for Windows work and VS to continue my
contemplation of .NET. Personally, I hope that is all I will need to do
with it for some time to come.
