Thanks for the reply.
Since sending the original message last night I have done a bit of research and discovered that the Jet Database Engine is not included in the MDAC from version 2.6 onwards and that you need to install msjet40 SP8 on top (the actual file needed depends on the operating system. See Microsofts KB239114 for details).
I have tried that and it works here (Paignton, UK) so now I am knocking up a quick and dirty wizard to send to our clients (in the midlands) to allow them to upgrade/install the Jet runtime.
