Well that's the 16 bit software's fault (a relic of Win 3.,1), not Win98. Win98SE isn't bad (not good either) and some of the killer (music) apps I had have been problematic on XP whereas they were fine on Win98. So, Win98 has it's place depending on where you're coming from.

previous job I had to put up with customers who were trying to run
unsupported 16 bit label design and printing software on XP. Sometimes
it worked and sometimes it didn't. When it didn't there was no way to
fix it and no way to explain what was going wrong. You could even
ghost the OS and software from a working machine to an identical PC
and sometimes it wouldn't work. So I got very fed up of customers
running ancient kit.
