Hello all,

After some chat on #koffice with (amongst others) Boudewijn
and Inge, I've
accepted the task of compiling a list of icons used and
needed in KOffice. This
because a couple of applications have different icons for
the same functions,
or worse, the same or similar icons for different functions.

The idea was to change to the OOo/KDE icon theme [1] to
improve consistency with
KDE's default theming. Nuno Pinheiro has already offered to
extend this set to
include icons that are needed but not yet available [2].

What I would like to ask of the application maintainers (or
others that are
willing to pick this thing up) is to send me a list with the
icons needed for
the various functions (menu items, toolbar buttons, ...) in
your applications.
In this way, I can check which icons should be created
according to Nuno's
offer. Another intention of mine is to compile a list of
icons used in a
multitude (or majority) of applications so that not every
application has to
include common icons.

How all this will exactly be done, and on which timescale
this should happen, is
not sure yet. But I'm confident that we can give our users
an even better
experience using KOffice, as they will much more instantly
and intuitively
recognise what is meant with a particular icon. Therefore, I
think that this is
a Good Thing[tm].

Thanks in advance for your cooperation! (And don't hesitate
to raise
suggestions, other ideas, etc.)

Cheers,

Sander
(askie on IRC)

There are some icons needed for karbon. These have to do
with distributing
objects on the document. These are:

- distribute centers (horizontal) = distribute space
between centers of
objects evenly
- distribute gaps (horizontal) = distribute space between
object borders
evenly
- distribute left borders = distribute space between left
borders of objects
evenly
- distribute right borders = distribute space between right
borders of objects
evenly
- distribute centers (vertical= distribute space between
centers of objects
evenly
- distribute gaps (vertical)= distribute space between
object borders evenly
- distribute top borders = distribute space between top
borders of objects
evenly
- distribute bottom borders = distribute space between
bottom borders of
objects evenly

Ciao Jan

Okay, for that we need a list of the actions in Krita. In
principle, I'd be
glad to go with whatever Nuno comes up for the rest of
koffice, but for the
art applications like Krita and Karbon, having monochrome
icons for the
toolbox is very important.

Tools (monochrome icons, with maybe a touch of color) The
ones marked with *
are the ones I'm not satisfied with.

freehand paint
line
rectangle
* ellipse (much darker than the rest)
polygon
polyline
* star (much darker than the rest)
* duplicate (it isn't clear what it does, looks like a gear
stick in a car)
filter
transform
crop
move layer (too black compared to the rest)
fill
gradient
text
color picker
pan (too white)
zoom (too colored)

All selection icons aren't much good:

paint selection (every paint stroke becomes selection)
erase selection
select rectangular
select elliptical
select polygong
select freehand (drawing a line around the selection)
select floodfill
select by color

Paintops

The paintop icons are colored and at one point, I want to
replace them with
bigger (i.e, wider, still one combobox line high) and more
realistic images.

Menu actions

Here, I'm completely satisfied to go with whatever KOffice
has. Or no icons.

I have allready talked to Nuno and he said he would need
something like there
is for OOo. You allready attached the link.

http://artax.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~kendy/ooo/icons/status/

With a page like this it is easier for the artists to
produce the icons. Also
it would be good to add a short description to every icon.
So at first I
think we should make a list off all used icons in koffice
like the above one.

He also thinks that it will take around 10 month to produce
a new icon set.

As I allreay asked for some icon updates he offered to
create them before the
1.5 release. After that he want's to make an oxygen icon
theme. There might
be some time for him to do other icons. So if you are deaply
in need for some
not many as there is not much time left he might be able to
do some more.

Also I like to raise the question again how about a koffice
icon?

Have a nice day,

Thorsten

I have committed a list to SVN in www/areas/developer/icons
- that is
www.koffice.org/developer/icons/ on the web. It is not
directly accessible from
the KOffice pages yet, I first want to know that everything
works.

The first part of the page is a list of all icons (and
perhaps some other .pngs
that didn't got removed by the filters I set up), with
space to add comments to
for the artists.

The second part of the page is the wishlist. Add your
requests, or if you have
insufficient karma, send them my way. For the mental
wellbeing of our beloved
artists, please be as specific as possible

I apologise for the inconvenience of editing a monolithic
.php file -- it is not
the nicest solution, but it's the easiest at this moment,
and the earlier the
stuff is ready, the better.

I also apologise for the horrible slowness of the page
loading. I'm going to
optimise the page soon.

Cheers!
