| "Supported" distros for
building ipcop |
  United States |
2007-04-02 16:13:11 |
As part of my QA process I would like us to decide what
distributions we will
support for building ipcop (both 1.4 and 1.5). I'd like to
keep the list
reasonably short:
1) LFS 6.2 - x86, ppc, sparc
2) Debian sarge - x86, ppc, sparc
3) Gentoo 2006.1 - x86, ppc, sparc
4) Fedora Core 6 - x86, ppc
5) Ubuntu 6.10 - x86, ppc
the next two I would prefer *not* to include, but they are
major enough so
perhaps we should support them
6) OpenSUSE 10.2 - x86, ppc
7) MandrivaFree 2007 - x86
Also, if there's interest I can look into building a minimal
live LFS-6.2
based cdrom to compile ipcop.
I think this is a sensible list and covers all
"major" distributions we should
focus on.
New versions of these distributions will not be
automatically supported unless
they don't break the other.
Please let me know if you agree on this list or if you think
I've forgotten
anything.

Would you perhaps consider building either an LFS-6.2 or
distro of your
choice above and making it into a VMWare session so that
anyone can just
use the vmware player to create a build environment.
That way you could periodically update it to meet needed
requirements in
libraries, etc. There should be no mismatched libaries, or
build levels.
VMWare player will load on many OS's, which means for the
most part,
anyone should then be able to build Ipcop without a lot of
hassle. Which
in turn should cut down on the number of help requests on
how to build.

It's an interesting idea and I've seen at least twice people
request vmware
images. The problems with vmware are:
1) Only for x86
2) One more level of complexity
3) One more piece of required software for ipcop
development
4) Licensing issues? Can we freely and legally redistribute
these images?
5) The pre-build toolchain already affords us independence
from the host os

When releasing 1.5 I take it is based on kernel 2.6? If that
is the
case, may I suggest to create a XEN image then?
1) Supports all current platforms
2) Should not provide an extra level of complexity because
XEN is part
of the current stable kernel
3) Do not require an extra piece of software due to it is
part of the
kernel
4) No licensing issues since XEN is released under GPL
5) No requirements are forced on the toolchains independence
from the
host os.

Should we think in the term of supported or unsupported
distro?
We could report on wich distro full build has been tested
and where the
toolchain was build.
We presume everyone could build the toolchain and ipcop
after.
If it is not the case, using the toolchain should be the
solution to build
ipcop.
Using a toolchain build on a recent distro but used on an
older look to be a
corner case.
It show that all toolchain packages are not equals. It is
simple to see that
toolchain package size vary depending on the distro to build
(one is 74 MB,
the other is 75 MB)
All that indicate me that I will build the next distributed
toolchain on
debian sarge to minimise the risk.
I would prefer to avoid distributing a different toolchain
for each distro.
This would become very painfull, considering the volume to
upload.
Since some time, we use one toolchain without complain, so
this should be
considered as working.
Toolchain actually is not used by default, should we do that
in the futur?

Gilles,
I guess I was a bit vague -- I didn't mean we should
distribute one
pre-built toolchain for every supported host distro. I
meant that I
wanted to make sure that any toolchain built on a supported
distribution
should work on any other distribution. But there'll be just
one
toolchain for x86, one for ppc, and eventually one for
sparc.
We don't have to force people to use the pre-built
toolchain, because it
was created only as a convenience to those who for some
reason couldn't
or wouldn't compile their own. Also, if everyone started
using the
pre-built toolchain, bandwidth usage would increase.
My original idea of "supported" distros was that
we guarantee that ipcop
will successfully compile on them and the pre-built
toolchain would also
work. If people wanted to compile on anything else, they
would have to
find workarounds/patches for their hosts.

Count the CentOS 4.3 in , I have built IPCops 1.4.11 - 1.4.15 successfully on it.

I've been successful building both versions on the 64 bit
version of OpenSuSE
10.2 by using the 32 bit Konsole. I've been using the
toolchain of course and
have been able to build the 1.5 toolchain locally by using
the glibc option.
