I don't see us as having "another couple of
years" in any way, we have
12-18 months at the most and if nothing in terms of forward
development
is seen by then I fear we'll have lost any and all chance
at retaining
3D content developers in Director. There are some
interesting
discussions going on around here as of late, I've been
chatting a bit
with the Acrobat 3D crew as we're sizing things up and
seeing how me
might work together, but until I have product plans to share
with y'all
that doesn't amount to much. My only point here is that I
think the time
is NOW (ok, the time for an update was last year, or the
year before
that even... :P ) for us to move on 3D in Director or else.

Honestly, I just don't know that I see that sort of thing
happening, at
least not via some alternate domain/site it won't. I agree
that we need
to update our core product pages a bit but that's part of
what we're
working on now. I don't know that we'll be doing a lot
with the old
macromedia.com domain so much as I'm talking with folks
about how we'll
organize things on adobe.com. For example, I want us to
focus on a few
specific markets for Director and Shockwave with one of
those core
elements being game/simulation training developers, that
would
necessarily require the kinds of content references you're
talking
about. Our product pages need updating in a lot of ways...
:/

I'm doing perhaps 50% of my work in Director 3D right now.

It is my belief that the original problem was the original
XTRA
wasn't seen to be immediately adopted.

I think my case was pretty representative: Wait 6 months to
see
what's going to happen with this new 3D stuff. Spend
another year
getting up to speed on contemporary 3D development. Spend
another
year attempting to find a suitable client. 6 months or more
of
development and there you are: 2-3 years later you can see
SW3D
projects.
The huge improvements in video cards of the last few years
have also
had an effect on how I'm able to sell this stuff. When SW3D
first
hit, non-gamer machines really couldn't cut it. (Although
Intel did a
terrific job on the software render.)
