We have been using StarTeam for over five years,
externalizing all lingo
scripts, graphic assets, actionscript, MaxScript, C++, etc.
In fact,
with the exception of databases, our SOP is to store any
file subject to
change in StarTeam. The .cst files are only checked in when
a script is
added or removed; the .dir files tend to be stubs, rarely
changing. We
have not had to resort to any customized workarounds.
Our teams range from five to forty people. Removing human
error such as
checking out a file without locking it, or changing the
default checkout
path for everyone, we have never experienced a problem.
Granted,
StarTeam is not cheap. We also use both AlienBrain and
Subversion, and
have not experienced problems with either, but StarTeam is
our primary
source control. Frankly, I prefer SourceSafe to all three,
but MS VS
Enterprise Team Edition is stupidly expensive.
We tend to use the built in editors for both Flash and
Director, but the
few times I have tried other editors I haven't encountered
any problems.
Good luck,
