We use a tool called FTPVC. We work entirely in linked
scripts: the tool
keeps track of which ones are checked out to who, and sets
those that aren't
checked out to be not writable. For the dirs and csts, we
have to be a bit
more careful: everyone has those set to be writable, but has
to remember to
check out the originals when they want to make a change
(fortunately, that
isn't necessary very often). It works well - the only issues
are remembering
to stay up to date with the system, and the fact that you
can't change an
external script while the movie's open, so if you want to
make use of
someone's new changes you have to close and reopen Director.
Oh yes - and of
course if you forget to make all the movies and casts
writable then you
can't save your work - oops.

Seriously, though, it works a treat. And keeps us on the
straight and
narrow, too - my natural tendency is towards free-for-all
programming, so
it's good to get some external discipline. But that's enough
about my
private life.
