Well, some interesting political things happened behind the
scenes.

 From what I've heard...

Macromedia almost purchased/licensed it, but there was a
disagreement
between the partners (Jules, Chris and the other guy who
lives in
Brazil now) at that time about that purchase/license that
broke up
the partnership. Jules went on to do his own 3d engine,
Chris went
who knows where and the other guy went on to do his 3d
engine.

I've seen the other guy's engine in various states of
working/ almost
working as it needs to but I heard that it didn't work as
billed on a
project for Motorola. One of the other list members (who
did see
that) can confirm or deny that for me since I didn't really
see it at
that state.

Do you know what this disagreement was about?

That's the same story I've heard from some colleagues, I
think using
Firefox or IE on a PC. Maybe the 1.61 html code is more
friendly?

Honestly I'm not gonna bug hunt for a product I don't have
interest into (yet
?). But for example the FPS demo used to consistently crash
my Firefox 1.5, I
just tried it again : no more crash but a "Unity update
is required but there
are other Unity players running, please close them and
rety" message, while I
don't have any other unity player running.

Also on the biggest french Director forum we've had a few
threads about unity :
some people had errors/crashes, others didn't but then some
saw the cool
shaders/effects while others didn't, some had a smooth
framerate while others
didn't... etc

That said, I'm not bashing Unity : I have a rather good
feeling about it overall
. It just doesn't look like a mature product to me yet.

Agreed, this is good news for Unity and I wish it continues
like this really.
But I still won't buy a Mac for that - yet

BTW I noticed the demo page got updated with lots of stuff
from you : didn't try
them yet but nice work anyway ! Keep it up so we can all
switch to Unity
comfortably when SW3D dies ;)

I seem to remember something on the website about a planned
windows version of
the dev environment, looooooong ago, which got me started on
keeping an eye on
it. I may just be wrong, I don't remember the details nor
when it was but I
really seem to remember that yeah, and going to the forums
to search for a
timeframe.

Same answer as for Taumel, sorry
forgot to mention in the previous post : FF1.5, winXP,
GeForce 6600GT

Yes. But I consider that private.

It's very interesting to read that the focus is going to be
the core
technology - don't forget the magic rule...

Content is KING!

If you don't have developers willing to purchase a Mac ( I
went in to
buy a Mac Mini recently to do some mac testing on for
Director, but
ended up purchasing a Tablet PC instead - the prospect of
running
Unity didn't swing my decision and to go Mac ), then the
developers
creating content will be vastly reduced ( it would be
interesting to
get some stats here - would the potential developer base go
up 200%,
or 2000%? - how much of an increase in revenue would that be
for the
company? )

As well as hiring engine developers ( Win, Mac, Wii etc ),
why not
hire in addition an experienced PC IDE developer ( hell, why
not even
get one with Linux experience too! ) to convert the main
development
app over.

To me, commercially that would make a lot more sense.

I'd keep an eye out on Blender also - the GE is vastly
improving (
Bullet 2 physics, it's about to get OGRE3D in-game graphics
), and it
already has total cross-platform code, including Linux.
There are
even screenshots of it running on PS/3 ( albiet in Linux
mode ), and
Pocket PC mode!!! ( albiet without the GE yet ). Blender
did have a
true cross-platform 3D plugin which was dropped when the app
went
open-sourced, but it's about to go back in again ( very
likely for the
next release after the up and coming one ).

It's now just about back to having a good, solid stable
platform -
you're going to see some great advancements over the next
year!

Free, and on Windows, and extendable ( get the source code
), with
access to GLSL shaders etc, may win some developers over
over "Buy a
Mac", and lose you guys some $$$. I'm currently
helping out with
fixing bugs in the GE, and intend to put a lot more time
into it this
year ( along with the other GE developers ).

Regards...
Mal

Okay, i think i understand what you mean.

Sadly times where you get bug free software from scratch is
kind of
over due to different reasons so personally i decide which
software
is really important to me and which one is not in order to
make a
choice for which one i'm willing to invest my unpaied time
to enhance
the situation and for which i'm not. For those i don't care
this much
i obviously hope that others care more than me and do the
work for me
so that i can come back later hopefully getting a better
product.

Only problem with that strategy is that don't get 100% of
the bugs as
there are bugs which only you take care of or which only
occur on
your machine. So the more feedback the better the situation
is
afterwards for all. Contrary to MM you here get answers and
things
get fixed, not immediately but time after time.

So the sooner you want this to be a more stable situation
the more it
helps if you report but as said before i also understand
your point
of view.

In a perfect world otee would come out with a bugfree
product without
that users have to report bugs or do betatesting before but
i guess
that's not gonna happen, due to otee is too small for
handling this
internally and it's a complex field, so...

taumel
