Regarding OToy, I believe that the Battle of the planets
games use it.

http://www.shockwave.com/gamelanding/zoltarsrevenge.jsp

I still haven't been able to play it though - it freezes my
computer.

The latest version of the Virtools plugin crashed my
computer on a few
different games.

The Unity plugin seems to be quite sluggish.

Overall, Shockwave 3D aint too bad if you're not targeting
fast
computers with the latest pixel shader eye candy.

The game worked for me on IE6, no problems installing the
plugIn and
running it.

I had no hardware support and was not able to switch the
renderer i
think i got
something between 10-20 fps.

Was somebody able to play it with a hardware renderer?

Actually their latest game is this one:

http://www.shockwave.com/gamelanding/battleracer.jsp

I really don't understand the point of otoy, built as it is
on the
unsuccessful groove alliance plug-in.
When you install it (PC-only I'm afraid!) the top pop up
blocker names the
plug-in as:
OTOY Web Player (c) JulesWorld LLC from 'The Groove
Alliance'.

Now, have you been to http://www.julesworld.com/
 or
http://www.thegroov
ealliance.com/ lately?
Anyway my point is, what does Otoy offer that's either (A)
new, or (B)
likely to make it penetrate the market?

I know I'm kinda bashing it a bit, but I really don't
understand why people
consider it likely 'to succeed'.
It's based on an already-failed plug-in, from an
already-failed company, and
created and marketed by a guy who although both friendly and
passionate
about what he does, failed to get a single demo of his
running on his own
laptop when I met him years ago to see if I'd be interested
in working for
him.

The funny thing is no matter how crap SW3D is, I still can't
pick out
anything and say 'that's even likely to replace it in the
near future'. Is
that a testemant to how good SW3D is? In part, but it's also
a sad comment
on how no-one else appears to be getting it right even with
the benefit of
hindsight.

If I try that in Firefox I get a message saying that the
game is not
available in this browser. If I use IE6 PC it goes through
the plugin
install, but ends with this message:

"The component in local file 'path the that dll' has
failed to
register and cannot be used"

Any ideas how to convince Windows XP to take the install of
a new
plugin?

This has been up for quite a few weeks at least:

om/company/jobs.html

"Windows GUI programmer.

We're looking for a great Windows GUI programmer. You'll
work out of our
office in Denmark on the Windows port of the Unity
editor."

I agree - time is of course money, and if the barrier to
entry is too
high ( if you can't check demos out in a half hour break,
and then (
if impressed ) download the technology and create something
in a few
hours over a week or so ), then most busy developers won't
give it a
go.

Works for me under OSX with Safari as well as on XP+SP2 and
Firefox
1.5.0.9. I only experience what Colin already mentioned that
you
sometimes get stuck a bit.

I would say for OSX unity is faster and more stable than
shockwave.

For windows there are some bugs but the player will get an
update.

Regarding Firefox there also was a note under known issues
for the
1.6.1 release.

The Unity Web Player running in Firefox on Windows computers

sometimes runs slower than it does in Internet Explorer.
This is a
bug in the Firefox "TalkBack" feature (FireFox's
automatic bug
reporting system). It specifically causes the context
switches in
OpenGL to take a needlessly long amount of time. You can
make the
Unity Web Player run fast again by simply turning off
TalkBack in
Firefox (Tools -> Add-ons menu). The performance issue is
not very
noticable with simple players, but if you use Render
Textures or
Image effects (for example reflective surfaces, blur, glow)
the
performance decrease can be quite drastic. The same issue
also
applies to other browser plugins (as for example Adobe
Shockwave).

Regards,

taumel

But other than that, how was it? Seriously though, could you
try it in
IE? I've heard of other issues with Firefox, maybe Tom is
listening
and can suggest something for Firefox users.

I tried in both IE and Firefox under Parallels (Windows XP
SP2).
Neither would load the page, so I went to the Unity site and
installed
the player. Still neither page loads. It fails silently. Is
there a
way to know what went wrong?
