Virtools, Unity, Otoy, Wild Tangent - none of them have been
able to crack
an install base large enough to make them "the"
choice yet. I threw Wild
Tangent in there because it's the perfect example of
something near death
now that was discussed as the "next big thing" on
this mailing list in the
past. Would Adobe be nuts not to add anything to 3D? Maybe,
but that's not
the really important question. It's the install base that's
important. How
ubiquitous is it? How willing are the large portals to
include games powered
by them in thier offerings? How willing are users to install
the plug-in?
I'm content to sit on the sidelines until a clear winner
emerges. In the
meantime Shockwave still has the largest penetration. I love
next gen
rendering features, but I don't NEED them. In fact, when
making web games
they can give you a distorted view of what's important and
reduce your
effective install base. I'm not sure MaidMarian.com would
succeed without
emerging markets like Eastern Europe and India - not places
where highend
graphics cards are common. I think the newer boxed MMORPGs
highlight this
really well. World of Warcraft is a fantastic looking game
relying on solid
art direction, not next gen rendering - a stategy that made
releasing into
China practical. EverQuest 2 and other games that made high
end rendering a
priority have not succeded. When I worked at a console game
company, I
remember game pitches that included rendering features as if
they were game
features. "We'll have normal mapping and ambient
occlusion!" I was a
Technical Art Director, so I loved that stuff - but at the
end of the day,
it doesn't make a great game. What worse is that developers
are so blinded
by the busy work involved with rending features that they
don't pick up on
the fact that the gameplay sucks. I'm not saying that my
games are anything
special, but for newer developers on this list - I'll take
ubiquity over
next-gen rendering any day of the week.
