Ok, last try,
here are now three zip files containing fbx5 and fbx6 (these
files where
exported with the lightmaps). The 3ds file
does for some reason not contain textures after the export
(cinema4D
exporter weakness)

Files:
http://kisd.de/~lutz/3dtest/q3dm18/data/q3dm18_fbx5.zip
http://kisd.de/~lutz/3dtest/q3dm18/data/q3dm18_fbx6.zip
http://kisd.de/~lutz/3dtest/q3dm18/data/q3dm18_3ds.zip

or go here to see them all:
http://kisd.d
e/~lutz/3dtest/q3dm18/data

It seems to be a very big problem to find a file format to
export and
import 3D files for games. I hope one of
these formats will work, i think fbx6 would be great,
because it seems
that animations can be exported too. Not
sure how shaders will arrive in unity?

A big minus is that you have to own cinema4D to import c4d
files. This
came not out very clear on the
unity website... Or does it only want to get in sync with
Cinema4D?

I really don't want to waste your time, but i really want to
see how it
performs in unity

Thanks a lot for testing this!

regards!
lw

Lutz provided the following Shockwave demo URL:

http://kisd.de/~l
utz/3dtest/q3dm18/

Using the FBX model files Lutz also provided, Joachim (our
CTO and lead
programmer, he occasionally follows dir3d-l and dirGames-l
chatter via
the archives online, including these last few days of
discussion) banged
out this demo late last night:

http://unity3d.com/joe
/q3_map/

So now we have essentially comparable demo files (although
in Lutz's
demo version there's a bit more UI although I don't know how
much that
will affect things as there's not much going on in the UI),
worth noting
is that the Unity version is only 714Kb compared to 1.4Mb
for the
Shockwave demo, although again I wonder about that UI and
what other
assets the Shockwave demo has in it. But no matter, if folks
here want
to test these side-by-side then now it seems they can. (FYI:
notice the
use of Unity's built-in mouse locking feature too )

On my side here's what I tested and the performance numbers
obtained:

PPC-based Ti Book (1.5Ghz) with a Radeon 9700
Safari : Shockwave demo : 7-13fps
Safari : Unity demo : 60-100fps

IBM ThinkPad T42 with a Mobility Radeon 9600
Firefox : Shockwave demo : 50-60fps
Firefox : Unity demo : 40-60fps

Compaq Presario R3000 with a Mobility Radeon 9000
IE : Shockwave demo : 40-60fps
Firefox : Shockwave demo : 30-50fps
IE : Unity demo : 30-60fps
Firefox : Unity demo : 30-60fps

In all of the above cases the performance seems at least
roughly
equivalent with the exception of the lowest end machine
tested, in that
case the performance numbers for the Unity demo were quite a
bit higher.
I of course also tested on my new MacBook Pro and had great
numbers for
the Unity demo but didn't see that as a far comparison for
Shockwave as
it would be running under Rosetta emulation as opposed to
natively, so I
didn't even bother getting those figures just yet.

So there you go Lutz, compare away! If anyone out there
bothers testing
on their machine and feels like sharing their results then
great (I'm
keen on hearing lower-spec machine test results), if not
then I'll leave
it for Lutz and Colin to discuss further.
