Does anyone in here have a good tutorial about

1) basic SMUS usage from within your director movie ? (I
found the
info on the macromedia/adobe site, but a kind of tutorial
would be
very nice)

2) Any info/tips on how you can optimally send the positions
of
players in a multiuser 3d environment ? (I suppose UDP is
used
herefore?)

Regards,

Bart

Hi Bart,

You can find two chapters on using SMUS, plus downloadable
source material,
here:

< http
://nonlinear.openspark.com/Multiuser.zip>

The text refers to other chapters that never got written,
but this should
get you started.

Cheers,

James

Well I can help on question 1.

Oh ya, sorry if this info is overkill

I will say we have just recently been having issues with
the SMUS. We hade to use the “#All” encryption for the
security issues (and tried a few other methods). One of our
MUS servers now has a heavier load (only a few thousand a
day) and it seems to lock up once in a while (we believe due
to windows updates & firewall).
It is strange. The exe will be running but just locked
up with a blank screen.
We are also going to create a txt log to see the last item
before it locked up (if the crash does not mess with the
creating of the log).

Firewall settings are open but it slows things down a little
(it checks for attacks and such) and that with the new
encryption causes issues where the MUS can not handle a
decent load.
The main issue is that it is difficult to trace the true
source of the issue as this did not exist before. No updates
and a software that is 6 years old has been designed for and
older version of windows 2000 the SMUS was not designed for
modern hosted servers. Simple windows updates could cause
issues or what ever.

So now will be converting our MUS Director to
SmartFoxServer.
SmartFoxServer is easy to set up and has all the modern
built in tools that we have to develop manually. And it also
works with Flash and Director.

Our hosting company www.shockwaveserver.com will be
supporting SmartFoxServer connections and dedicated servers
as soon as we do some conversions and testing.
