Bart,
This announcement was made by Ritesh Banglani, the
Director/Shockwave
product manager, to the Director 3D online forum:
"Still here, guys. I cannot give an exact release date
for the next version,
but it will likely be towards the end of the year rather
than the middle.
The Shockwave Vista release (with DirectX 7) will be out
sooner - in 6 weeks
or so.
We will NOT upgrade the 3D feature set in the forthcoming
Director release.
Requirements like new platform support, performance and text
engine
enhancements are very urgent, and we don't want to delay
this release beyond
2007. However, we are committed to maintaining Shockwave as
the leading 3D
format on the web, and you WILL see 3D enhancements in a
subsequent release.
The move to DirectX 9 is a signal of our long term
commitment to Shockwave
3D.
I know this is not the answer many of you are looking for. I
appreciate your
patience, and hope to keep the channels of communications
open!
-Ritesh"
...
So, reading that literally, it lists these 3 main areas for
the 2007
release:
* new platform support -- obviously Mac/Intel and Win/Vista
* performance -- unclear, but could be the new SpiderMonkey
engine for JS
* text engine -- this is clearly adding Unicode
"Performance" might also be taken care of more or
less by the upgrade to
Flash 9 support, and some of the direct-from-Flash features
that Tom Higgins
spoke of (like access to on-sprite shadow effects, and image
filters). One
might vainly hope for performance tweaks to the SW3D engine,
but isn't it
more likely that they're not going to touch it at all?
Adobe is probably thinking, OK so this is a relatively
pedestrian update,
but Intel and Vista support will be enough to sell it, and
Unicode for some.
I can't really blame them... I just think, when will we see
a bigger push
for Director? Will the team stay minuscule, because then it
might take very
long before we see any of our wished improvements...
/Rasmus
