Yes, the registry settings will override attempts to set the
renderer by
setting getRendererServices().renderer in Lingo, and will
override the
_movie.preferred3DRenderer. If by "preferences"
you mean when the user
selects one of the five "3D Renderer" choices in
the Shockwave context menu,
then no, because they are actually the same thing.
Selecting a renderer
option in the context menu updates those two registry keys
("renderer3dsetting" as soon as you click the
selection,
"renderer3dsettingperm" once the Shockwave applet
exits).

Depends on the graphics card. I had no luck getting OpenGL
working on a
Intel Extreme embedded GPU, but it didn't support Aero (no
PS 2.0), and
isn't a good candidate for this OS anyways. But on several
other
nVidia-based GPUs, OpenGL worked, but with significantly
worse performance
than DirectX7, about half I think. I'd expect that to
improve eventually.
Graphic drivers for Vista is still a work-in-progress,
especially when you
look at the rate ATI and nVidia releases beta builds. BTW,
has anyone tried
SW3D on an ATI Vista machine?
