Money...as 3D is quite expensive to develop and support.

Although at a cost of almost £1k per copy of Director and
what, about £3-400

for upgrades, you would have thought that would be enough to
support
updating SW3D, but apparently not, not even over 5 years of
accured profits
;(

Having said that, Adobe/MM are possibly the only company in
a position with
enough funds, to develop a whole new sw3d xtra (even if
based on the old
version) and sell it as an add on to the basic version of
Director. To which

i'd happily pay another few grand for.

Well, not quite jumping up and down happy, but happy enough
that such a new
xtra would provide substancial benifits over the old, that I
and my clients
would be convinced to invest another £1k in purchasing it,
esp considering
the cost of some competitors.

Sadly i think we'll see nothing, no updates to sw3d, no new
versions add-on
or otherwise, no nothing.......

To get back on topic, I assume the original posters interest
in Virtools,
means there still isn't a viable competitor for SW3D?
Although I did hear that Panda3D has recently got a macOSX
playback beta
underway and I think Unitiy finally has a good level of
cross platform
support.

Does Panda3D have a web component/plugin available? It
looks like an
impressive platform...
