Hi all,
is there any way, using SANE API, to pass EXIF data from a
backend to
the application? I am looking at the coolscan2 backend and
wondering if
resolution, position, date, scanner model, etc could be
stored in the
output TIFF file.

Thanks,
Giuseppe

I found an old thread about this subject, of august 2003.
From that thread
it seems that the better approach would be to leave EXIF to
the frontend.
BTW, it was suggested to enhance sane-2 in order to have a
better
interface even for EXIF.

What is the status of SANE-2 implementation?

Thanks,
Giuseppe

what about the possiblity of adding a named option and give
the exif data
in a read-only text string? the only problem i see with that
is that the
value of this option would only be valid _after_ the page
has been
scanned (ie- the length of an adf scan may not be known
before scanning)

what parts of exif cannot be extracted from existing sane
options?

Probably the best answer is to look at all possibile tags
that a scanner
could set: http://www.exiv2.org/t
ags.html

The list is from the exiv2 project, a free software that
display and
modify EXIF data in JPEG and TIFF files.

The list is mainly for cameras and only a few tags will
apply to
scanners, but SANE-2 should also handle cameras, isn't it?

Probably you may want to store informations that SANE will
not handle,
i.e., my scanner uses 14bit per color channel, while sane
handle only 1,
8 or 16. Or you may store data like "Whote point
chromaticity".

Wikipedia even (http://en.wikipedia
.org/wiki/EXIF) write that EXIF does
not contain any scanner specific tags.

Bye,
Giuseppe
