out of memory: umax Powerlook2100XL / Debian 2.6.15/16/17

:~$ scanimage -L
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname SAA7146A virtual
device
device `umax:/dev/sg1' is a UMAX     PowerLook 2100XL
flatbed scanner

output from xsane: Failed to start scanner: Out of memory

I've testet it with kernel 2.6.15 / 2.6.16 / 2.6.17 ->
every time the same

xsane is i386 / Version: 0.99+0.991-1

Some time ago I've tested it with an early 2.6.x kernel
-> works

What could be the problem?
