I know I've posted on this before, but I'm still fighting
with
this HP 5200 after all, since I lost my other scanner option
to a lot of
things changing at the place I could go to scan. I'm using
Oralux, a
Knoppix-based distro, and an HP5200 that I bought about 6-7
years ago.
When I try to scan with it, I get the following:
$ scanimage >test.ppm
scanimage: sane_read: Error during device I/O
$ scanimage >test.ppm
scanimage: sane_read: Error during device I/O
$ scanimage >test.ppm
scanimage: no SANE devices found
$ scanimage -L
device `hp:libusb:001:002' is a Hewlett-Packard ScanJet
5200C flatbed
scanner
$ scanimage >test.ppm
scanimage: sane_read: Error during device I/O
$ scanimage >test.ppm
scanimage: no SANE devices found
Sane-find-scanner gave me the following:
found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [Hewlett-Packard],
product=0x0401 [HP
ScanJet 5200C]) at libusb:001:002
A subsequent "scanimage -L" returned
"device `hp:libusb:001:002'
is a Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 5200C flatbed scanner".
When I'm actually trying to scan with it, e.g.
"scanimage
>test.ppm", it kind of half starts up like it's
going to scan and then
just sits there. Occasionally it'll actually get around to
moving a
little, but that was only the first time or 2. And just
now, when I
wasn't even touching it, it decided to make a little noise.
I know I've probably asked some of this before, but maybe
I didn't
ask it right or didn't read something right. What makes it
do this? How
can I fix it? If you need any more info I'll get that to
you as well.
Thanks,
Terrence

As a workaround you may uncomment the line *option
dumb-read* in hp.conf.

If I uncomment the "option dumb-read" line, I
still have the same
issue. I did "scanimage --verbose >test.ppm"
and got:
$ scanimage --verbose >test.ppm
scanimage: scanning image of size 2550x3507 pixels at 1
bits/pixel
scanimage: acquiring gray frame
scanimage: sane_read: Error during device I/O
$
So it looks like it's trying to scan, but isn't getting
anywhere.
And after all that, the scanner just made noise again, as
though it were
going to start a scan or something.

if the scanner is making noise without scanning stop it at
once it could
be damaged.
Which version of SANE are you using?

you're up-to-date

for a more detailled information you may do this:
export SANE_DEBUG_HP=255
and then
scanimage -L (gives a lot of output).
Only to be sure that there are no hardware reasons - if you
have further
USB-ports available at your box, you may plug the scanner
there and look
what's going on.
