Cann't get Mustek 600 III EP working.

I am trying to get my Mustek 600 III EP working under linux
with no 
success. I downloaded the latest sane front and back ends
and built and 
unstalled them. I loaded kernel modules parport and
parport_pc. But 
scanimage -L returns "no scanners found".
What else if anything do I need to do?
