Oliver Rauch has referred me to this list as he thinks it's
a back-end problem.

I have a HP LaserJet 3300 which has a flat bed scanner and
NO feeder.
On running XSANE stand-alone, the device is correctly
identified.
The option says "flatbed". However, when I try to
scan, it gives "Document
feeder out of documents". What do I need to do?

Cheers,
Art H.

well, it depends on which backend is controlling your
scanner? the
hpoj backend is unmaintained, and the hpaio backend is
supported by hp
on another site.

I forgot to say I was running a new distribution of Ubuntu
and am a
Linux newbe. Ubuntu installs hplip and thus hpaio. Any
other thoughts?

perhaps try asking the hplip folks? also a google search
seems to turn
up some hits for this problem...
