Hi All,

As this is my first mail to this community, please allow to
introduce
myself. I am krishna Abhishek and I work as the Sun Campus
Ambassador at
SASTRA University, India.

I have been working over popularizing OpenSolaris amongst
students and
you read about some of my efforts on my blog
http://blogs.sun.com/
krabhishek

One idea after which I have been working for quite sometime
now is
creating OpenSolaris Education Stack. The idea is to do:

1. Create a (huge) documentation project in which concepts
of modern
operating systems are explained using OpenSolaris as a case
study. Also,
the concepts of other areas of computing like Networks,
Security etc.
are explained in depth, with detailed explanation on how it
is
implemented in OpenSolaris.

2. Create a distro of OpenSolaris to support this
documentation project.
This distro would have set of F/OSS educational applications
along with
a application to browse the documentation and execute the
experiments
discussed in the documentation.

I would request you to kindly give your views on this.

IMHO, if we can create a very good study material, where the
emphasis is
on the concepts taught in text books and OpenSolaris is used
as an
example to explain them all, it will attract lots of
students who are
"developers of tomorrow" to use OpenSolaris and
then when they would
develop, they would consider developing on and for
OpenSolaris as their
first option which in turn add new blood into the community.
If we
already have something in place like this I would like to be
a part of
it.

If you are really adventurous, add in virtual memory to the
list. VM
is generally only explained very conceptually in OS texts
because
there is so much detail you need to get right, much of which
is
machine-dependent. Tanenbaum left VM out of Minix, which is
otherwise
a nice demo of simplified OS concepts, for example.

Sure. I would love to add every possible concept into this
project. But
for this, we would certainly need support from experts of
OpenSolaris
community as well as from the academic community.

It would be a great help if you could tell us that along
with VM what
else would you like to see in this project?

Regards,

Abhishek
