That sounds excellent. I would build some packages and
provide an IPS depot myself but I'm not yet familiar with
opensolaris.
I think scientific software is an area where Linux
distributions really shine. Not only are there scientific
specific distributions, but even a general purpose
distribution such as Ubuntu has packages for most every OSS
scientific program available.
As for myself, my immediate need is mainly computational
biology and statistical software. I think this is a good
guide of some of the OSS scientific software that would be
great to include
