skipping MPG video (Windows XP, SP2)

Hi all, and a question about a mysterious problem:
my simple test presentation has suddenly developed
a horrible skipping in the video (audio is ok), without
any apparent reason - i can't remember doing anything
remotely relevant inbetween, other than running some
video editing SW (Premiere, Media studio).
I have the latest DirectX, and have even reinstalled
Ambulant, which didn't help;
the Firefox plugin jerks the video too.
The video by itself plays normally (Real player, Windows
Media player, media player classic, ..)

Any ideas, anyone?

BTW, the context is synchronisation of the video recording
of a play with the text of the play .. strangely, i can also
find
NO work of this type on the web .. is anyone doing something
similar?
