I think that fixing other developers' bugs (whether as a
paid job or not)
should not be construed as "scoring points".

Software projects, and particularly open source projects,
should require the
highest standards when accepting new contributions. Besides,
a little
competition among developers may actually help in that
area.

For the rest, I agree. Acknowledgment of developers and
their sponsors is
important to encourage better and more numerous
contributions.

Cheers,

I agree completely with both of these statements.

What I meant by the phrase "scoring points" was
finger-pointing at other
developers and questioning their motives or level of skill.
We're all
contributors and I choose to believe everyone is doing their
best.

Personal comments or sarcasm are at best easily
misinterpreted, and at
worst, hurtful and denigrating to others. . I'd be very
disapointed to
see the list go down that route, as many other mailing lists
have done.

Guilhem - I'm not singling out *anybody* by this comment, so
please
don't think it is about you in particular, as it is not
intended as such.

My intent is to refer to everyone

Once more, we are in agreement.

Indeed, this one of the main things I like about CVS, and
the use of CVS
history in each source file. Thus, each file contains a semi
permanent
record of who made what contribution. Sure, there have been
mistakes made
in these entries, but usually those with CVS commit
priviledges get the
commit message right.

It does cause some anxt- some complain that the history at
the head of the
file is too long. However, the reply is: get a better editor
which folds
that all away.

My view is that hiding those commit messages, and requiring
the user to
type cvs history on some file is see the commit message is
not good
enough. Open source projects are required to thank people
frequently and
often. Public acknowledgement is the motivating factor of
open source
development (just like wages/salary is the motivating factor
of closed
source code).
