Hi,

I am wondering if there exists a tool which allows for
generating
sample text for some regular expressions, ie. someone could
put "a+"
in, configure the generator (eg. specify: create one
matching unit for
optional arguments) and the sample text "a" would
be returned.
Of course, there would be no 1:1 mapping, just one sample
text the
regexp would match against.

AFAIknow, there is no such tool in existence. U'll have to
write it
yourself, i guess. What would be a potential application:
training
people in regex?

You may find our tool RegexBuddy useful.  On the Create tab, RegexBuddy
can show a detailed explanation of the regular expression.  You can
export this to plain text or HTML via the Export button on the Create
tab.  On the Use tab, you can select the "comment with RegexBuddy's
regex tree" function to get the same explanation formatted as a comment
that you can paste into source code.
