The editor has been mostly unmaintained since 0.6, although
some
work was done to make it work with 0.8. It's generally
believed
that it would be best to rewrite it from scratch, and there
was
a GSoC project last year to do exactly that, and although
there
was some headway, it's not possible to edit pipelines.

Since no current developer has picked it up in several
years, it
seems reasonable that there isn't a need for it in the
current
developer community. So it will likely be a new developer,
if any,
that starts working on it.

My experience is that developers heavily underestimate the
benefit of
debugging tools. Most people just use what there is, because
everyone
else uses it, too. Only when they've seen working debugging
tools do
they realize how nice they are. Were it not for some people

implementing those tools, we would still be hunting invalid
reads and
writes with printf because everybody else does it this way,
so it must
be good enough.

I can tell you from my experience with rewriting the
pipeline parser,
implementing caps_to/from_string and reworking the debugging
system,
that people only believe in debugging tools when they see
them work.

Cheers,
Benjamin

Thanks to this work, gst-launch is indeed a very useful
debugging tool
for gstreamer and I think a graphical version does not
provide
signifantly better functionnality to that respect.

The value added of a graphical pipeline editor could be to
easily cook
up a small standalone application from the edited pipeline,
or just
run it to a filesink, as the poor man's video editor.
Something like
quicktime composer.

Christophe.
