Hi,
Exciting news, I hope you can get this roling.

Who gets the money? There's no such thing as the GStreamer
Foundation.

I'm affraid we already have those. Mplex and mpeg2enc are
excellent,
100% DVD-compliant libraries from the mjpegtools project,
which take all
odd DVD hardware out there into account, including all bugs
and
shortcomings. The plugins can (in 0.8) be found in
ext/mpeg2enc/ and
ext/mplex/. The elements may not be ported to 0.10, but that
is a
practical issue that is not worth a Google SoC project.
Some GNOME projects have a very thin line between being a
"GStreamer" or
a "GNOME" SoC project, so it may be a good idea
to work together there,
rather than do contradictory or redundant work.

I'm pretty sure it's the students doing the work getting
the money.
If not, I'm completely up for getting all the money sent to
me !

US$4500 go to the student, and US$500 go to the project the
students work for:

Students get 500$ after project acceptance, 2000 after an
initial review
after a month of work, and 2000$ on project completion (or
"not
completed but lots of work done, we're happy", to be
decided by the
mentoring organisation).
For every completed project, the mentoring organisation gets
500$ too.
So no, not all 5000$ goes to the student. Its 4500+500.
See the FAQ at the SoC pages for more information.

Well I guess we could do like the Gimp project have done
with the money
and let the GNOME Foundation for instance hold the money for
us. Not
sure what we could/should do with the money apart from maybe
paying the
domain name fees for gstreamer, org and gstreamer.net. Maybe
making
GStreamer t-shirts?
That said I got a negative response from Google this
morning. I am now
trying to appeal that decision, but it do mean that at this
point
acceptance into the program isn't the most likely outcome.
We could
still do some SoC projects under the banner of other
projects, but it do
limit us a bit I guess.
So if we work from the other projects angle there are
currently at least
3 projects where I think it would be natural for us to
submit some
projects under like GNOME, KDE , Mono. I already checked
with GNOME and
they are fine with us submitting some projects under their
name. And I
guess neither KDE or Mono would reject a relevant project
submitted
under their name.
I let you all know how things develop and which path we need
to take.
