Index Data is asking the YAZ and Zebra communities to help
make these
products more sustainable. The heart of this initiative is
our new
ticket-based support system.
Many of you already contribute to YAZ, YAZ Proxy and Zebra
by
discovering bugs and weaknesses in the code, and others of
you take
the initiative to develop fixes for them as well as to
extend their
functionality. It is this active participation, along with
occasional
sponsored development, that has enabled the YAZ family of
programs
and our Zebra server to continue to improve and keep up with
your
rising needs and expectations.
But this is not enough for sustainable development. That is
why we
are asking all of you who rely on Zebra or any of the
programs in the
YAZ family of products, and that do not already have a
support
contract with us, to purchase our new ticket-based support
service.
(see http://www.indexdata.com/support/ticket-support-agr
eement.pdf).
We expect that most of you who can afford to do so will want
to sign
up for this new support program. In addition to insuring
that Index
Data developers will continue to improve and enhance the YAZ
family
of programs, ticket-based support also offers you a level of
support
similar to what we provide in our standard support agreement
(http://www.indexdata.com/support/st
andard-support-agreement-yaz-and-zebra.pdf),
but costs only $500 for a group of five resolution tickets.
And if
you don't need to use the tickets for support before they
expire
(after two years from issue), you can redeem them for
sponsored
development. This feature makes ticket-based support both an
excellent value and an investment in the future of YAZ and
Zebra.
As we all know, freely available Open Source software is not
really
free. Money and programming resources are needed to keep the
effort
going. Up to now, most of those resources going to YAZ and
Zebra have
been contributed by a few of you who have sponsored major
development, and by Index Data staff who have taken time
from their
paid work to keep on improving the software without
compensation. We
are asking all of you to be honest with yourselves and with
us: if
you feel that YAZ or Zebra are important for your
organization and
you have been getting a "free ride," please do
the right thing, both
for yourselves and for the entire YAZ and Zebra communities,
and sign
up for our ticket-based support.
Please mail a signed contract or purchase order to David

Thanks,
David
