I had to install YAZ and then copy yaz.dll along with all
other dlls from 
the <YAZ_INSTALL>/bin to the
<XAMPP_INSTALL>/apache/bin folder and also 
update the php.ini in the same folder.
It fixes the problem I had before.
Thanks a lot for the update.

seems like my xampp uses php_yaz.dll v1.0.7 compiled with
YAZ 2.0.19 whereas 
I am using YAZ 2.1.38!

I Couldn't do a lot of testing yet, but do you think I
should be fine?
Any idea where I could find a more recent compiled version
of php_yaz.dll? 
(the windows link is dangling on the indexdata website)
