Has anyone successfully initiated a connection with the BnF?
Their
target information is linked below. I've tried the most
recent YAZ
client as well as an older one, but my connection is refused
each
time, whether or not I use an auth setting.

Corinna,
I can confirm your results. Looks like the server doesn't
really
support that ID/Password. Perhaps one has to request an
account.

Hi Corinna,
Try to use the YAZ client like this:
% yaz-client -u "Z3950 Z3950_BNF"
z3950.bnf.fr:2211/TOUT
Note that I use a space instead of a slash between username
and password
above. This cause the YAZ client to send an idPass structure
instead of
the more conventional 'open' option for username/password
combinations.
Most server will accept either variant, but this server
seems unusually
picky.
Hope this helps,
--Sebastian

Yes it has, thank you (mails to the BNF have always gone
unanswered).
Bibliothèque nationale de France (Catalogue BN-OPALE PLUS)
(TOUT)
Authentication set to User (Z3950), Pass (Z3950_BNF)
Connecting...OK.
Sent initrequest.
Connection accepted by v3 target.
ID : DBV-OSI II UNIX API
Name : Frontal Z3950 BnF (YAZ Proxy)
Version: Version 1.0
Options: search present delSet scan namedResultSets
Elapsed: 1.345688
Sent searchRequest.
Received SearchResponse.
Search was a success.
Number of hits: 263, setno 1
records returned: 0
Elapsed: 2.395480
One other thing though ... how might one write an authOpen
to connect to
the BNF?:
authOpen(z3950.bnf.fr:2211/TOUT)=Z3950/Z3950_BNF
authOpen(z3950.bnf.fr:2211/TOUT)=Z3950 Z3950_BNF
and
authOpen(z3950.bnf.fr:2211/TOUT)="Z3950
Z3950_BNF"
all seem to fail with Client / server connection rejected
(server-error
init).
Best regards,
Richard

This is a ZAP-based client? If so, you need to use
authUserId and
authPassword instead -- see

Thank you very much for this suggestion (am using `mod_zap'
by the way).
Substituting:
authOpen(z3950.bnf.fr:2211/TOUT)=Z3950/Z3950_BNF &c.
with:
authUserId(z3950.bnf.fr:2211/TOUT)=Z3950
authPassword(z3950.bnf.fr:2211/TOUT)=Z3950_BNF
established the connection and everything else has worked as
expected.
Best regards,
Richard

Thanks to all who responded. I was able to connect use open
authentication, which I hadn't even thought of trying.

sorry - i meant to say that using idPass authentication
worked (open
auth does not).
