That should be libpng.so.14 (since it is a major revision

libpng.so.3), and that is what is generated, but the default
is
not to generate anything (this seems correct to me).

The *comment* 'default=yes' in the configure.ac option 
--with-libpng-compat is wrong though - the default is now
'no'
