I have tried installing both ways that you mention (as root
and su -
user), but I get the same message. I tried to run the
command "xhost
+root, and xhost +oracle" and I receive the error
"xhost: bad hostname
"root" or "oracle" depending upon which
I use. I am running the command
as root. Any more suggestions?

Are you installing Oracle?

I had a similar problem, as the installer doesn't like
running as root.
I got around it by assigning a password to the oracle user
and granting
oracle the right to ssh into the machine (temporarily), I
then did: ssh
-X oraclehost
Ran the installer (did the same for all add-ons as well)
then as root:
passwd -l oracle to lock the oracle user out (just a
security measure).

Note:
X11Forwarding yes, must be there in your sshd_config if you
intend to
use ssh.

Also have you tried: xhost +oraclelocahost or oraclehostname?
