Thread: up2date broke up2date RHEL4

up2date broke up2date RHEL4

up2date seems to be broken on one of my Nahant Update 4
servers. It was
applying 8 updates yesterday and when it got to the
kernel-smp-devel
package the connection timed out. Now when I "up2date
-u" I get package
conflict errors and there seems to be data missing from the
error
message (pasted below).

RHN claims that I need to apply security updates for php and
xorg-x11
(RHSA-2007:0076 & 0003) but up2date complains that I
already have them
when I try to "up2date -i" them by name. An
"up2date --undo" produced
an AttributeError and I'll paste portions of
/var/log/up2date below
showing the packages that were updated including the error.
I also
tried "up2date -p" and "rpm --rebuilddb"
which didn't seem to make any
difference.

Thanks,
  John

On some older systems (RH8 and RH9), I occasionally had to
delete the
temporary files in /var/lib/rpm/ and rebuild the rpmdb
database:

  rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*
  rpm --rebuilddb
rpm -vv --rebuilddb /* if you want lots of output */

It's been a while since I have had to do this, but it might
help (and it
shouldn't hurt).

Alfred,

Thanks for your advice. I was able to fix the system.

First I tried:

rpm --rebuilddb
rm -rf /var/spool/up2date/*
up2date-nox -pvvv --hardware
up2date-nox -lvvv
up2date-nox -uvvv

But had the same issue. RedHat support suggested that I
remove the
packages that up2date was complaining about with:

rpm -e --justdb --nodeps --noscripts --notriggers
php-pear-4.3.9-3.22.3
rpm -e --justdb --nodeps --noscripts --notriggers
php-ldap-4.3.9-3.22.3
rpm -e --justdb --nodeps --noscripts --notriggers
xorg-x11-deprecated-libs-devel-6.8.2-1.EL.13.37.5

I was able to then have a normal 'up2date -u' and it seems
to be
fixed.

cannot execute binary file
country flaguser name

Hello,

I've run into some trouble lately when installing software
on RHES ES 4
EM64 . Newly installed executables will not execute. Even
when including
the entire path, I still get the error message "Cannot
execute binary
file". Permissions are 755, file is owned by root and
belongs to the root
group. I tried starting it from a non privileged user and
still the same.
SELinux has been disabled in an effort to try and debug
this. The
executables I am talking about are supposed to be compiled
for 64 bit
Linux.

This has happened to two different executable files so far,
and it seems
to me that I remember there being some security attribute
that will not
allow executable files to run just anywhere or something
like that.

Would anybody have any information on this?

Thanks in Advance
Pete
