"Verify" question

Hi,

I'm trying to install Familiar Linux and bootldr on an HP
iPAQ h5555. 
To do this, I'm using BootBlaster3900-2.6 with the image 
bootldr-pxa-2.21.12.bin.gz.  I haven't yet reprogrammed the
factory-
installed bootloader, but when I run the
"verify" command under 
BootBlaster, it tells me:

   mach_type = 203 = 0xcb
   Your flash is in an unrecognized state.

It strikes me as a bad sign that BootBlaster can't
recognize a known 
good configuration.  Am I using the right tools to change
the bootloader?
