ManyToMany/ filter_interface / prepopluation problem

I just know this is a stupid question, but I'm only
beginning to figure
this out, so I hope you all will have mercy on me.

I'm trying to establish a many to many relationship and use
the
filter_interface to select which items from A are applicable
to B. My
problem is that the first of the two boxes has nothing in
it. The
heading's there, but no items. Shortened model below:
