I am using FOP 0.93 
and the 1.72.0 stylesheets to make a PDF file. I have noticed that the 
<subscript> feature places the letters correctly, but allows the spacing 
between the lines to increase. See attached image for example. 



 



Is there a way to 
keep the lines uniform?

The line-height-shift-adjustment property is used for this:

In DocBook XSL, the default is set to
"disregard-shifts" in the
root.properties attribute-set:

The property is not supported by FOP 0.93 (it is supported
in the
"Development" version, so I suppose it will work
with FOP 0.94):
