In HTML 4 the caption for a table is optional. In DocBook 5
with the
HTML table model it seems to be required. Is this true? If
so, why?

It's an attempt at compromise between DocBook which has two
table
elements, one with a title and one without, and HTML which
has only
one.

The short answer is, you want an HTML table without a
caption, you
want an informaltable.

                                        Be seeing you,

There are also another differences -- e.g. HTML table can
not have info
element with additional metadata. If you are using
customized DocBook
V5.0 (like addition of <object> element that Norm
mentioned before) you
might also consider to remove HTML (or CALS) table model
from schema to
have just one table model in the schema. See

If so, why?

Captions with good content aid accessibility comprehension

Now that I'm using informaltable for my captionless tables
I'm getting
messages like this:

build/week2/week2.xml:3247: element informaltable: validity
error :
Element informaltable content does not follow the DTD,
expecting (info ,
((textobject* , (mediaobject+ | tgroup+)) | ((col* |
colgroup*) , thead
, tfoot , (tbody+ | tr+)))), got (tr tr tr tr tr )
</informaltable>

Are thead and tfoot really required? Or is this just a
limitation of the
DTd as opposed to the RELAX MG schema?
