we were trying to create pages named [[SP++]] and [[--SP]]
and according to 
the documentation, they should have been converted to
"sp__" and "__sp", but 
instead the links were created to just "sp" ...

Nope, it's correct behavior. Multiple underscores are joined
to a single
one and underscores at the end and start are removed
completely.

it is currently the expected behavior, but as we see here,
it isnt desirable 
in all cases ...
