You can use the update-alternatives command:
$ sudo update-alternatives --list x-session-manager
/usr/bin/gnome-session
/usr/bin/xfce4-session
If I'd like to set it to Xfce, I can set it with:
$ sudo update-alternatives --set x-session-manager
/usr/bin/xfce4-session
I'm not sure what the IceWM session is called, which is why
you'd have
to do the alternatives listing first.

thanks for your responce .
I soon found out that not everybody wanted to use the same
window manager ; is there a way to
have different window managers for different users ( I
still want to control who uses what )
