Thread: Filed bug, but developers decided not to fix

Filed bug, but developers decided not to fix

I filed the following bug a few weeks ago at launchpad.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/n
etwork-manager/+bug/123808

Basically the bug indicates that with network bonding
enabled and I am sure this could
happen in other instances, the NetworkManager applet pops up
on clients allowing users
to change the IP address of the server thus crashing the
entire system. This happens
with non-priveleged users with no admin password even asked
for.

I saw this as a huge bug, but apparently the devels that
look at the report just said I
shouldn't have NetworkManager installed on a server....duh!
I of course removed the
applet so users could not get access to it. But a fix
should still be put into place,
such as not including it by default in Edubuntu. Not a good
thing for a school to
install a fresh new Edubuntu server assuming safety with the
defaults, just to have a
student change IP's and crash all clients (in my case 108
machines could go down
simultaneously with the default setup).

Please someone fix this.

Thanks,

Jim Kronebusch

I forgot to post back to the list that Alexander assigned
this to Ogra and there was an
immediate fix. Great job guys. I didn't mean to slam
anyone in my emails, I was just
concerned that this would slip away without a fix. I posted
this in the best interest
of the software and didn't mean to offend anyone if I did.

Thanks for the great work,
Jim

How and in what version has this fix been implemented? I
notice nm-applet
is running on several of my users' desktops. Do I need to
patch and
rebuild it myself or is a fixed package available?

On reflection, users have the network-manager applet
running, but they
can't reconfigure things without using sudo so I don't have
a problem.

Okay. The fix will be in Gutsy and the patch to implement
is posted at the end of the
bug report.

Thanks, I built one alright, but on reflection it looked
like I didn't need
to install it.

Perhaps there's something different in your situation, but
if an ordinary
user on my feisty system tries to reconfigure things via the
network
manager, they get prompted for a sudo password (which will
only work for
admins).

I have a manual network/interfaces setup, but presumably so
do you so I'm
puzzled as to why this is an issue for you and not me? Any
ideas? Have I
missed something and in fact I really do need this?

I presume you are not using adapter teaming which is the
difference. The teaming seemed
to confuse NM to where it did not think it had a valid
address which launched the applet
and gave the users ability to change things. There most
likely isn't very many users
using teaming so this only applies to oddballs like me
