Hi all,

This email is mainly divided into 3 questions for you all
because I
still have not been able to make 'sound' decision about
this.

Many schools in LAm countries (Latin America) do not have
internet
access 24x7 and/or with great bandwidth. So, I know there
are working
efforts for a Wikipedia CD version, which could be great for
the
aforementioned schools, indeed. Nevertheless, would it be
better/possible to sync those 'encyclopedia' contents
instead of
downloading everytime?

I ask because a few weeks ago, MoinMoin wiki has released
another
feature: 'Sync pages', which means a user can actually
synchronize
contents between a local wiki and a remote wiki server,
therefore, this
will reduce the downloading time and size, plus... it would
also allow
schools/users to upload/contribute with contents to the
Edu-Commnunity.

Why Moin can do such thing? AFAIK, because Moin uses
plain-text content
that is rendered as nice reading-friendly html on the
browser side. So
syncing plain-text is neither painful nor so risky.

= 1st question =
Do you think this culd be useful to manage educontent?

= 2nd question =
Is it possible and simple to sync educontent from/to L.A.M.P
like sites
(local <-> remote)?

= 3rd question =
Since some Moin versions ago, Moin includes a WYSIWYG editor
that makes
generating content very simple fro teachers/students.

Has any of you had experiences using wikis on
Education/Learning tasks?
Would you?

Regards,

Hola Mauricio,

I think that your idea about managing content specifically for those that do not have internet and/or have older computers is an excellent idea. I have downloaded the wiki but unfortunately was unable to get it working due to errors when importing the database.

However, being that we are working with schools throughout Bolivia and many without internet, it would be great to see a distribution that works for our needs. I am currently coordinating a shipment of P3s from the US here to Bolivia to distribute to various communities throughout Bolivia. It would be great to give these people a working sytem that includes such internet tools as wikipedia and edubuntu without the need for an internet connection. (As it currently stands, edubuntu is NOT equipped to install to Spanish without depending on an Internet connection.)

I am currently watching ubuntu boot on a P3 with 128MB ram and it is taking too too long. I know, I should just get more ram.

Regardless, Mauricio, gracias por tomar en cuenta los paises menos favorecidos, tal como Bolivia
and I would love to see something that we can use here!

Which wiki? which DB?

for 'any' wiki, I'd totally suggest MoinMoin Desktop
Edition which runs
on M$, OSX and Linux, by simply unpacking and executing it.

Believe me Jason, I am very interested on delivering a
spanish-default
flavor of Edubuntu, even with spanish docs, spanish
edu-content, and a
wikipedia CD. However, commited hands to achieve this from
the
edu-oriented community are still very few and the lack of
funding is
also an issue, esp. to deliver this once is ready to LAm
countries.

Personally, at this moment, I don't even have machines to
play with, not
even a server to test 'normal' edubuntu flights or stuff,
just this thin
laptop which has recently survived a serious HD problem.

Maybe, it is time for me/us to write down some specs and see
if we get
what we need.

However, I do not lose hope
